Guten Nacht

I've been in Munich a few days now, and I'm enjoying my stay immensely, apart from the chapped hands and face.  It is freezing.  The first afternoon it snowed big wet flakes.  So much for spring.  It's very similar to my hometown, where winter lasts long into the spring months.  I prepared for the weather, but there's only so much you can do when you spend large portions of the day outside.  I spent all day yesterday exploring Dachau, and I don't think I will dethaw until my plane lands in California.

Munich is quite beautiful, but somehow different from what I expected.  Even though I knew they rebuilt the city after the war to its original splendor, it's disarming to see old buildings with no war damage after having seen Berlin.  There's also little mention of what happened here, which caught me off guard.  Today I went on a city tour and the guide explained that mentality and showed us the memorials that are inconspicuously dotted around the city.

Hostel-living is interesting as always, but I've braved my shy nature and met people, which is good.  I even chatted with the guy next to me on the plane, which I never do.

And anyone who knew me pre-Drew will love the vast change I've made from not being a dog person at all to learning that I'm now checking out every dog I see on the streets of Munich--and there are quite a few, they're very dog-friendly--because I miss my dog so much.

Auf wiedersehen for now.

Glad you're enjoying Munich - it's so beautiful there but so conservative. Have you heard of Kunstpark Ost? It's a little haven of youthful expression for the free of spirit. Schlaf schoen!

How exciting to here from you in situ. I spent holiday time as a child in Germany - and been to Berlin as an adult, but never to Munich. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Drew is at my parents house as I write this. I just got off the phone with my mom and she says Drew says, "Woof!" (Translation: "I miss you, Mom!")
