On Balance

I received two rejection letters in the last two days, but I also returned home to my lovely signed and personalized copy of Caroline's Disraeli Avenue, an Amazon giftcard, and my beautiful present from husband, which I had to leave behind while we traveled to Oregon for Christmas last week:

I was also somewhat heartened to learn that the finalists and runner's up in the contest where I submitted one piece, included not only well-published writers, but also tenured writing professors.

I had a lovely time with family and friends, and we enjoyed a white Christmas, but I'm glad to be back in my own space with a return to 60-degree weather in California. (I think Drew would love to be a snow dog though.)

Snow! I am so jealous.

Thanks for ordering DA and for your support. As the sales were so low your limited edition will be extra special :)

Happy New Year. I hope it brings you happiness and success x

Caroline, I'm surprised you don't have snow over there too.
As soon as I finish Wuthering Heights, I'm digging in to my extra special copy!
Happy New Year and many returns to you. x

Spiral, it was beautiful and very Christmassy.
May 2009 be the year for all my writer friends too! Cheers. x

Hulla, thanks sweetie, and to you as well. x

Lane, Happy New Year and may all your writerly wishes be granted as well. x

JJ, yes! It's been rare the last few years, but I didn't think it would stop snowing this year.
I can't wait to crack open those pressies.
Happy New Year. x

Welcome home, Ang. Sorry about the poo poo rejection letters, but it sounds like your competitors were quite esteemed and you should take consolation in that fact. I know 2009 will be a great year for you, so keep that chin up.

Your presents look so fun! Enjoy! :-)

Thanks, Kris. Chin is up and ready for some good news in 2009! ;)
You'll have to come check out BtB. It's awesome.

I'm glad you had such a lovely holiday.

Sorry about the rejections -- finding the right spot for one's manuscript really is like dating -- you probably won't find your soul mate the first few times out -- as you well know from your time on the other side of the table! It's a very intimate relationship, in many ways.

Best wishes.

Devon, thanks for visiting.

I think I'm finally developing a thicker skin for rejections. I'm practicing by sending out shorter pieces so I'm prepared for the next round when I plan to send the novel ms to agents. Dating is a great analogy!
All the best.

Sorry about your rejection letters. I could wall paper my whole living room with the one's I got on my first novel.

While waiting for an acceptance letter, I've gone the e-publishing route with my novel with a service called Illumitas.net. It lets me earn a few bucks each month on my novel until I get that "yes" from an agent or publisher.
