Midnight scribblings

Last night I was suddenly inspired to dive into the editing of Chapter One, after I struggled all week to start. I haven't slept well for weeks, tossing and turning while my thoughts swirl around writing, editing, money, my career, etc.

Why my inspiration has to strike at midnight instead of 8am, I'll never understand, but it seems to be the way my brain works. At least I was finally able to sleep after I finished a bit of work.

I like Chapter One. I like the storyline, the characters, and the setup of events, but the very first paragraph has bothered me for a long time and I could never pinpoint why until last night. I found the key to fix it. (Huzzah!)

I actually quite enjoy editing, not only because it caters to my obsessive perfectionist personality, but also because it allows me to polish my writing until the inner diamond shines through the rough tangle of words. I am a tough editor though:

The red ink is corrections, the blue ink is notes on the story, and the pink post-its are the rewrite of this section after I ran out of room to write the corrections in the margins. :)
I suppose I have some work to do.

Angie, that's so great. It looks really clear and well organised. I think I might like the editing bit, if only I could get past the first draft bit!

Excellent work: give yourself a pat on the back.

That looks great Angie, who cares when inspiration strikes as long as it does strike, right? Well done for taking the first step!

Glad to hear that you were able to get all of that editing done in the middle of the night. The only thing I can do well at midnight is drool on my pillow.

JJ, let's hope I can manage to keep it clear and well organized. The first draft bit is a nasty bugger! Good luck. It sounds like you're on the right path.

Yvonne, true, I just wish I could keep it on a schedule (that's my type-A talking...) but creativity is trickier than that I 'spose.

Thanks Kristen. :)

Chad, I'm a night owl so it's more natural for me to work well at night, but I keep trying to convert to morning bird...

Hi Angie - You look very organised and creative. Well done you!

My coloured felt pens are in the packet and my first draft remains unmarked. Tomorrow - I will tackle the 'what was I thinking' and 'maybe I should get a new ambition' and start to edit.

Ah, thanks, Kat.
Good luck beginning your edit. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised. First drafts aren't meant to be perfect, but it's fun to find the golden nuggets in there. :)
